It was over twenty six years ago that the Westray mining explosion occurred when twenty-six men who were working underground on late shift were still trapped and were eventually killed in the explosion. Since then, it was the worst mind-blowing disasterous event that had changed the pace of Westray forever. It was a foggy morning on May 9th, 1992 when an underground methanine explosion had rippled through the Westray coal mine in Plymouth, Nova Scotia killing twenty-six miners in the process. In the years that followed, the public came to learn that the mining disaster was caused by a reckless disregard for miners safety, poor oversight by government regulators, and mismanagement of the mine itself. It has been and will always be the blackest of marks in Canadian history. It was a tragedy of all sorts when the mining disaster occurred, the Westray coal mine opened in Plymouth in Fall of 1991 and had been in operation for a scanted eight-month period.
